People’s Food Co-Op in Ann Arbor reopens café after 3-year

ANN ARBOR, MI — Fresh coffee is finally back and being served at the People’s Food Co-Op in Ann Arbor after a three-year hiatus.

The People’s Food Co-Op, 216 N. Fourth Ave., officially reopened its café at the beginning of July for the first time since March 2020. Customers can once again get their fix of lattes, cappuccinos, espressos and mochas made using fair trade and organic coffee.

“It was something we had been wanting to do for awhile,” said Troy Clark, the People’s Food Co-Op’s marketing and outreach coordinator. “The decision to open the café kind of came after we were able to get our kitchen back up and running.”

The grocery store’s well-known hot food bar made its comeback in November 2022 after also being closed since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Clarke said the People’s Food Co-Op wanted to ensure it had the right staff members around before reopening the café portion of the business.

Now the café is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Clarke said the business hopes to extend the café hours in the future so they can align with the store’s regular operations and also feature some weekend hours.

“We are just kind of feeling it out almost as if it is new again,” he said. “It has just been awhile so we don’t want to overextend ourselves and want to make sure we can provide a good service before we expand into longer hours.”

Besides the new hours, customers can expect their café experience to be “comparable” to what it was like prior to COVID-19, Clarke said.

So far, Clarke said the overall response from customers has been good, but there are quite a bit of people still learning the café has reopened. Regardless, he said the People’s Food Co-Op is optimistic about the cafe’s operations and what it can bring to Ann Arbor once again.

“There was an energy that was missing in the co-op with the café being closed and it is nice to have that back,” he said.
