the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin timepiece
Swiss watch brand Hublot pairs up with coffee company Nespresso to recycle used coffee grounds and capsules into watch straps for the recently unveiled the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin timepiece. The watch forms part of Nespresso’s Second Life initiatives which finds the company collaborating with other brands to repurpose its coffee grounds and capsules.
The lush green shade of the watch recalls the hue of unroasted coffee beans and the verdant coffee plantation, balanced with the sudden appearance of the aluminum. Fused with the recycled Nespresso capsules, the repurposed aluminum of Hublot shows up as the case, the bezel, the crown, and the pusher of the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin watch.

a nod to Nespresso’s Master Origins Peru Organic
The 42-mm case, crown, and pusher of the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin from Hublot and Nespresso are crafted in recycled aluminum, of which 28% comes from Nespresso coffee capsules, anodized in vibrant green, then satin finished and polished. The bottom of the case and the container are both made from Eco-Titanium (recycled titanium).
The titanium buckle of the rubber strap, with its decorative recycled aluminum cap, and the sports buckle of the Velcro strap are also in the same anodized green color, which is a nod to Nespresso’s Master Origins Peru Organic coffee capsule. Hublot engraves Nespresso’s iconic ‘N’ engraved on the crown of the watch, a symbol of their collaboration.

Hublot carves a custom oak box for the casing
For Hublot and Nespresso, creating the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin demonstrates the possibility of adding value and recycling raw and used materials. The watch straps, which embody Hublot’s patented One Click interchangeable strap system, are worked on in collaboration with SingTex, one of Nespresso’s partners who was already using recycled coffee grounds to produce a fabric called Scafé.
The interchangeable watch straps are materialized in rubber or fabric, with the latter being 100% recycled fabric – composed of 5% coffee grounds and 95% recycled polyester – and is being used for the first time to make a watch strap. The Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin, which is limited to 200 pieces, is set to be housed in the Hublot Greenbox case, a new casing designed by the Swiss watchmaker for all its future watch lines.
The box is made completely of oak, including the hinges, and is carved from traceable wood, both of which are sourced and manufactured in short supply chains. It is intended to be reusable, with 98% of its detachable inside composed of eco-friendly and recyclable materials. It is produced with eco-labelled recycled textiles, plastic yarns, and PET, as well as recycled paper and cardboard. For the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin, Hublot Greenbox casing is embellished with Nespresso’s sigma.
